Polaris Shines Brighter: New Surface Details of the North Star Unveiled!

Astronomers have just revealed groundbreaking details about Polaris, the North Star! Using the advanced CHARA Array at Georgia State University, scientists captured the North Star's surface in incredible detail. With a diameter 46 times larger than our Sun, Polaris is also home to large, mysterious surface spots that might hold secrets to cosmic evolution!

New findings from the CHARA Array reveal significant details about Polaris, including its immense size and surface anomalies. These observations help refine our understanding of Cepheid variables, which are essential for gauging astronomical distances and studying the universe’s expansion. (Artist’s concept.) • Polaris, known for guiding explorers, is also a Cepheid variable—a type of pulsating star crucial for measuring cosmic distances and understanding the universe's expansion. The new findings, published in The Astrophysical Journal on August 20, offer an unprecedented view of this iconic star, revealing not only its size but also its dynamic surface changes over time.
The CHARA Array is located at the Mount Wilson Observatory in the San Gabriel Mountains of southern California. The six telescopes of the CHARA Array are arranged along three arms. The light from each telescope is transported through vacuum pipes to the central beam combining lab. All the beams converge on the MIRC-X camera in the lab. • Astronomers plan to continue studying Polaris, hoping to uncover the origin of the star’s surface spots and its long-term rotational patterns. This research not only improves our knowledge of Polaris but could also sharpen the tools astronomers use to measure the universe.

The North Star just got a whole lot more fascinating—stay tuned for more cosmic discoveries!
