"Unveiling the Universe's Power: Highest-Energy Gamma-Ray Line Discovered!"
In an astonishing breakthrough, a team of scientists from the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has discovered the highest-energy gamma-ray line ever observed in the universe. This record-breaking discovery, measuring up to a staggering 37 million electron-volts, originated from an exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) named GRB 221009A.
- Gamma-ray bursts, known as the most powerful explosions in the universe, can occur during the collapse of massive stars or when neutron stars and black holes collide. GRB 221009A, observed on October 9th, 2022, belongs to the former category and has been dubbed the "brightest of all time."
- To capture and analyze this extraordinary event, a collaboration team, including researchers from IHEP, Yunnan Observatories, Hebei Normal University, and Guizhou Normal University, used data from two space gamma-ray monitors: GECAM-C and Fermi/GBM. While Fermi/GBM suffered data loss due to the burst's intensity, GECAM-C's sophisticated design provided accurate measurements, helping to correct the Fermi/GBM data.
- The analysis revealed that the gamma-ray line energy evolves as a power-law function of time, a critical clue in understanding this cosmic phenomenon. The ratio of the line width to energy remains constant, further solidifying the origin and reality of these gamma-ray lines.
This discovery is not just a milestone in the study of gamma-ray bursts but also opens new avenues to explore the physics of GRBs and their relativistic jets, offering profound insights into the most energetic processes in the universe.
