"NASA's Webb Unveils Stunning Celestial Fireworks: A Star is Born!"
In an awe-inspiring display of cosmic artistry, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope(JWST) has captured a mesmerizing image of celestial fireworks surrounding a forming star. This dazzling scene, imaged by Webb's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), showcases a fiery hourglass shape that marks the birth of a very young protostar.
- A Glimpse into the Cosmos
The vibrant colors within this mid-infrared image reveal intricate details about the central protostar's behavior. Nestled in the neck of the hourglass, this protostar is just 100,000 years old and is actively gathering material from a protoplanetary disk, visible as a dark line across the center. Surrounded by its parent molecular cloud, the protostar gradually consumes gas and dust, contributing to its growth.
- Cosmic Pyrotechnics:
Webb's previous observations using the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) had already provided a peek into this region, showing the molecular cloud and protostar in stunning colors. However, MIRI's latest capture goes further, unveiling the effects of outflows emitted along the protostar's rotation axis. These outflows create bow shocks and filamentary structures, carving the hourglass shape and causing the regions above and below to glow, reminiscent of fireworks illuminating a cloudy night sky.
- Unveiling the Hourglass:
The blue regions in the image represent carbonaceous molecules known as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. At the same time, the red areas indicate the protostar itself and its surrounding dense blanket of dust and gases. The white region above and below the protostar, not as visible in the NIRCam view, shows a mixture of hydrocarbons, ionized neon, and thick dust, highlighting the protostar's energetic jets propelling matter far away.
- A Star's Journey:
The protostar will eventually consume, destroy, and push away much of the surrounding molecular cloud as it evolves. This spectacular display will gradually fade, revealing the star more clearly to visible-light telescopes. The insights gained from both near-infrared and mid-infrared views help us understand how these young stars influence their surroundings, potentially disrupting or catalyzing the formation of new stars.
