Indian Space Startups Revolutionize Space with Fuel Stations!

  •  Have they never heard of a fuel station in space?

Indian startups are making headlines by working on groundbreaking technologies to build just that – a space fuel station. Two Indian startups, OrbitAid Aerospace Private Limited and Manastu Space Technologies Private Limited, are in charge of this revolutionary development, with OrbitAid Aerospace specializing in these innovative technologies.

  • A Game-Changer for Space Exploration

You've likely heard about air-to-air refueling for fighter jets, but soon, you might hear about refueling satellites in space. The concept of a space fuel station aims to extend the lifespan of satellites, reducing the need for frequent launches of new satellites. This innovation saves money, minimizes the risk of space debris, and cuts down the higher costs associated with launching replacement satellites.

  • The Technology Behind Space Fuel Stations

These pioneering startups are working on creating a constellation of tanker satellites to establish a 'Space Fuel Station.' These satellites will be strategically placed in different orbits and fitted with technology for docking and refueling other satellites. They will carry a variety of fuels, including monopropellants, bi-propellants, and electric propulsion fuels, catering to the specific needs of their clients.

OrbitAid Aerospace introduced the Standard Interface Docking and Refueling Port (SIDRP) to facilitate refueling. This dual-purpose fill-and-drain valve, equipped with an integrated dual docking mechanism, will serve as a fuel station and support refueling for future interplanetary missions.

  • Collaborative Efforts and Future Plans

OrbitAid is currently discussing deploying these tanker satellites with ISRO and several international partners. Their plans also include on-orbit servicing (OOS) for various space applications. OOS focuses on servicing, repairing, and even upgrading satellites already in orbit, enhancing their operational capabilities and extending their lifespans.

  • OrbitAid Aerospace: Innovators at the Forefront

OrbitAid Aerospace Private Limited, incubated at the MSME Centre of Excellence at IISc Bengaluru, develops solutions to extend satellite life, reduce debris, and enhance operational flexibility. Founded by Sakthikumar R., Nikhil Balasubramanian, and Mano Balaji K. in 2021, OrbitAid Aerospace is at the forefront of this transformative technology.
